HALF THE PEOPLE WON'T READ THIS...

….half will

Today, Thursday July 3rd is half way through 2008!  Big question - is this your best year ever or is it only half as good?

Aren’t halves funny?

It’s one of those words where the more you say it the less it seems like a real word. Go on, say it ten times.

Although a very precise measurement we use ‘half’ to describe general situations; ‘It was only half as good’, ‘I’ll half it with you’ and ‘half hearted’ spring to mind.

Using the word ‘half’ is often associated with the negative – time to change that one!

A business colleague of mine said to me yesterday, ‘We spend the first half of the year trying to make money and the second half trying to hold on to it!’  What are you focusing on?

Here’s a challenge for you.  Take half an hour in the next day to answer six simple questions.  The first half focuses on the last six months the second half are about the next.

Here are the questions:

1)     What has been the very best things that have happened in the last six months?

2)     What have you learned (positive or negative) in last six months?

3)     Think about where you are now. How would you describe your life based on the experiences of the last six months?

4)     What needs to change in order to have a brilliant next six months?

5)     Write down you short term goals for the next six months.

6)     What resources do you need to attract into your life to achieve your goals and have a brilliant life?

I’d like to share a few interesting statistics about this exercise.

20,000 people receive our newsletter – only half will open it.

From the 10,000 who open it – only half will click through to read it all.

From the 5,000 who clicked through (that includes you) only half will want to do the exercise above.

From the 2,500 who want to only half will.

From the 1,250 who will only half will actually write it down.

That leaves 625 from 20,000 roughly 3%

Here’s the exciting part, those 625 will achieve more (much more) than the other 19,375.  The reason? It’s difference between those who know and those who DO. There are millions of people who know (they know it all!) but very few who actually take the time to do.

Which are you?

Dear Michael,

I have recently taken over a Sales Manager's position for a brand new ready mix mortar company based in the North East. Things are going really well for the first depot we opened in Washington, but the depots in Manchester and Sheffield have been slow to take off...

I have wracked my brains for reason why and tried several different marketing approaches but sales are still poor - any ideas? I really want to make a success of the business, is there something I've missed?

Stacey

Hi Stacey,

Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to make ready mix mortar sexy! First question you have to ask is 'Why do people buy?' The best people to ask will be your customers (especially your Washington ones).  Most customers are never asked this question, especially in the Business-to-Business world. You'll find that when they are asked, more often than not they love to tell you.

Next, take this valuable information and ask some tough questions. You want to know if Manchester and Sheffield are fulfilling customer's genuine needs rather than the perceived ones. I'd like to bet that they fulfil their own perceived notions ahead of their customer's genuine needs.

Finally - be prepared (and get your staff) to change. You're new, you're learning and change is expected - make the most of the moment.

Be Brilliant,

Michael
