The ability to read is a gift! Did you know that five million adults in Britain have a reading age of less than 12? Imagine for a moment what it would be like if you couldn't read. Now here's the good news - you can! But are you reading enough?  And are you reading the right stuff?

Jim Rohn is one of my great mentors. He’s the daddy of the personal development movement and seen as a master of developing human potential. Every week or so he sends me an email entitled ‘Vitamins for the mind’. It contains a couple of paragraphs with some gems of information. If I don’t have time to read them I file them in a little folder to the side of my inbox because I will get round to it – won’t I?

Here’s a shock. I looked earlier today and there were 8 editions I hadn’t read. It took me 22 minutes to catch up and read the 16 gems. Ten I knew but didn’t always do. Four were new to me and 2 reaffirmed I was doing the right stuff. The information was there, all I had to do was read it.

Some of you may have heard me tell the story of my first meeting with David Brown. Mr Brown was my inspiration and mentor when I was aged around 25. He gave me the challenge, ‘what are you doing right now for your own personal development?’ A brilliant question. After my fumbling response he suggested I should read. And read I did. For two-and-a-half years I read a book a week (that’s 130 books) and to this day I have always had a book or two on the go. In August I read 14 books; this week I’ve read one, I’m on to my next but still I want more!!!

Isn’t reading BRILLIANT!

If you’ve read this far thank you. You see, if there weren’t readers there wouldn’t be writers and that’s half of my job – so thanks. Here’s a little something extra for you now.

The Ultimate Reading Guide

Have you ever picked up a book and started reading only to find yourself drifting off into another plane?  Your eyes are still moving along the lines but you haven’t got a clue what you just read.  Or have you ever found it difficult to get into a book, but found that frustrating because you really wanted to understand the content?

Here’s a simple way to get the most out of reading – and how to increase your reading speed too!

Just before you are about to read, have a quick flick through the chapter or chapters you want to study.  Then close your eyes, take three deep breaths and relax.  Some people find it easier to relax than others so just do what feels right for you.  Once you feel relaxed imagine you are in a beautiful reading room.  A place you would associate with knowledge.  Visualise the book you are reading in front of you and turn to the page where you wish to start reading.  Then see yourself reading very quickly and the information leaping from the page and going directly to the relevant part of your brain. Feel yourself understanding the information, processing it and storing it in your memory in such a way that you could recall it whenever you needed it.

This should only take a second or so per page.  Then open your eyes and start to read.  The first thing you notice is that you can read faster.  Some people even double or triple their reading speed using this method.  Next you will notice how easy it is to understand and process the information.  Finally you’ll notice how you are storing the information in a clear and concise way, knowing that you can recall it whenever you need to.

Once you have finished reading, close your eyes again and see yourself back in the reading room.  Tell yourself you will be able to remember and recall the information that you have just read.

That’s it.  By mentally rehearsing your reading you’ll be able to read faster, more accurately, have better understanding and be able to recall the information.  Now go and test it!

Dear Michael

After the horrible summer we’ve had and with the dark nights setting in I’m feeling down.  I know I can’t change the weather - but what can I do?

Thank you,

Marion

Dear Marion

For readers in the UK it must feel like it’s rained for the last six weeks.  That’s because it has! The comedian Billy Connolly says, ‘there’s no such thing as the wrong weather, only the wrong clothes!’  Billy lives in Los Angeles, but he has a point.

That point is we have to make choices about how we feel.  The fact that we can choose how we feel is a wonderful skill which you must develop.  Start with the small things Marion like making a grateful list.  Then buy a new coat, treat yourself to something a bit special and you’ll soon be looking forward to coldest of days.

Be Brilliant!

Michael
